# Skills Module - Remarks Update Guide

## Overview
Updated the Skills Assessment module to support **two separate remarks fields**:
1. **Teacher's Remark** - Comments from the class teacher
2. **Head Teacher's Remark** - Comments from the head teacher/principal

This matches the existing report card system and provides comprehensive feedback.

## Changes Made

### 1. Database Schema Update

**New Columns Added to `skills_students_ratings` table:**
```sql
ALTER TABLE `skills_students_ratings`
ADD COLUMN `teacher_remarks` text DEFAULT NULL AFTER `teacher_id`,
ADD COLUMN `head_teacher_remarks` text DEFAULT NULL AFTER `teacher_remarks`;
```

**Migration of Existing Data:**
- Any existing data in the old `remarks` column will be migrated to `teacher_remarks`
- The old `remarks` column is kept for backward compatibility (can be dropped later)

### 2. User Interface Updates

**Changed in `application/views/skills/rating_entry.php`:**

- **Removed:** Roll Number column (unnecessary for rating entry)
- **Added:** Two remarks columns with adequate space
  - Teacher's Remark: 200px width, textarea with 2 rows
  - Head Teacher's Remark: 200px width, textarea with 2 rows

**Sticky Columns:**
- Column 1: # (index)
- Column 2: Student Name (180px)
- Column 3: Teacher's Remark (200px) - **NEW**
- Column 4: Head Teacher's Remark (200px) - **NEW**
- Remaining: Skills columns (scrollable horizontally)

**Visual Improvements:**
- Textareas provide more space for longer comments
- Both remarks visible before scrolling to skills
- Better layout for data entry

### 3. Backend Updates

**Modified `application/controllers/Skills.php`:**

**`save_ratings()` method:**
- Now captures `teacher_remarks` from POST data
- Now captures `head_teacher_remarks` from POST data
- Stores both in database alongside skill ratings

**`getExistingRatingsForClass()` method:**
- Returns `teacher_remarks` array organized by student_id
- Returns `head_teacher_remarks` array organized by student_id
- Pre-populates both remarks fields when editing

### 4. Model Compatibility

**No changes needed in `application/models/Skills_model.php`:**
- The `saveStudentRating()` method already handles dynamic data
- Automatically saves new fields when present in data array
- Fully backward compatible

## Installation Steps

### Step 1: Run Database Migration

Execute the SQL script to update the table:

```bash
mysql -u your_username -p your_database_name < update_skills_remarks_columns.sql
```

Or in phpMyAdmin:
1. Open phpMyAdmin
2. Select your database
3. Go to SQL tab
4. Paste contents of `update_skills_remarks_columns.sql`
5. Click Go

**What this does:**
- Adds `teacher_remarks` column
- Adds `head_teacher_remarks` column
- Drops old `remarks` column (since no existing data)

### Step 2: Verify Database Update

```sql
-- Check new columns exist and old one is gone
DESCRIBE skills_students_ratings;
-- You should see:
-- teacher_remarks (text, NULL) ✅
-- head_teacher_remarks (text, NULL) ✅
-- remarks column should NOT exist ✅
```

### Step 3: Test the Interface

1. Log in as Admin or Teacher
2. Go to **Exam Master → Skills Assessment → Rating Entry**
3. Load a class/section
4. Verify:
   - Roll column is removed
   - Two remarks columns appear (Teacher's & Head Teacher's)
   - Both remarks columns are sticky (don't scroll away)
   - Textareas allow multi-line entry
5. Enter sample remarks and save
6. Reload the page - remarks should be preserved

---

## Usage Guide

### For Teachers:

1. **Rating Students:**
   - Select exam, class, section, and class level
   - Load students
   - Rate each student on all skills (A, B, C, D, E)
   - Add **Teacher's Remark** for each student (optional)
   - Leave **Head Teacher's Remark** blank (for head teacher to fill)
   - Click **Save All Ratings**

2. **Editing Previous Ratings:**
   - Load the same class/section/exam
   - All previous ratings and remarks will appear
   - Modify as needed
   - Save again

### For Head Teachers/Principals:

1. **Adding Head Teacher's Remarks:**
   - Load the class that has been rated by teacher
   - Previous ratings and teacher remarks will be visible
   - Add your remarks in the **Head Teacher's Remark** column
   - Save

2. **Workflow:**
   - Teachers rate students and add their remarks
   - Head teacher reviews and adds final remarks
   - Report cards generated with both remarks

---

## Report Card Integration

### Current Status:
The report card PDF template (`reportCard_junior_PDF.php`) currently displays:
- Academic performance with subjects and grades
- Skills assessment ratings by category
- Rating scale legend

### Next Steps (Future Enhancement):
To display remarks on the report card PDF, you'll need to:

1. Update the `Skills_model` to fetch remarks along with ratings:
```php
public function getStudentRatingsWithRemarks($student_id, $exam_id, $session_id) {
    // Fetch ratings grouped by category
    // Also fetch teacher_remarks and head_teacher_remarks
    // Return combined data
}
```

2. Modify `reportCard_junior_PDF.php` to display remarks:
```php
<?php if (!empty($teacher_remarks)): ?>
    <div class="remarks-section">
        <strong>Teacher's Remark:</strong> <?= $teacher_remarks ?>
    </div>
<?php endif; ?>
<?php if (!empty($head_teacher_remarks)): ?>
    <div class="remarks-section">
        <strong>Head Teacher's Remark:</strong> <?= $head_teacher_remarks ?>
    </div>
<?php endif; ?>
```

---

## Technical Details

### Data Flow:

1. **Form Submission:**
   ```javascript
   ratings[student_id][skill_item_id] = rating_id
   teacher_remarks[student_id] = "text..."
   head_teacher_remarks[student_id] = "text..."
   ```

2. **Controller Processing:**
   ```php
   foreach ($post['ratings'] as $student_id => $student_ratings) {
       foreach ($student_ratings as $skill_item_id => $rating_id) {
           $ratings[] = [
               'student_id' => $student_id,
               'skill_item_id' => $skill_item_id,
               'rating_id' => $rating_id,
               'teacher_remarks' => $post['teacher_remarks'][$student_id] ?? null,
               'head_teacher_remarks' => $post['head_teacher_remarks'][$student_id] ?? null,
               // ... other fields
           ];
       }
   }
   ```

3. **Database Storage:**
   - Each skill rating row includes both remarks
   - Multiple rows per student (one per skill)
   - Remarks are duplicated across skill rows (by design)
   - Latest remark overwrites previous

4. **Data Retrieval:**
   - Query groups ratings by student_id and skill_item_id
   - Extract unique remarks per student
   - Return as separate arrays for frontend

---

## Clean Installation

✅ **Clean Schema (No Legacy Columns):**
- Old `remarks` column has been removed
- Only `teacher_remarks` and `head_teacher_remarks` exist
- No migration needed (no existing data to preserve)
- Clean, purpose-built schema for two-remark system
- All installation scripts updated with new schema

## Troubleshooting

### Issue: "Unknown column 'teacher_remarks'"

**Solution:** Run the database migration script:
```sql
ALTER TABLE `skills_students_ratings`
ADD COLUMN `teacher_remarks` text DEFAULT NULL,
ADD COLUMN `head_teacher_remarks` text DEFAULT NULL;
```

### Issue: Remarks not saving

**Solution:** Check browser console for JavaScript errors. Verify POST data includes:
- `teacher_remarks[student_id]`
- `head_teacher_remarks[student_id]`

### Issue: Remarks not loading

**Solution:** Verify `getExistingRatingsForClass()` includes new fields in SELECT:
```php
$this->db->select('ssr.student_id, ssr.skill_item_id, ssr.rating_id,
                   ssr.teacher_remarks, ssr.head_teacher_remarks');
```

---

## Future Enhancements
