## How It Works Now

### Before Migration

```
exam_term table (separate, limited)
├── id
├── name (LONGTEXT)
├── branch_id
└── session_id
exam.term_id → exam_term.id
```

### After Migration

```
academic_terms table (centralized, comprehensive)
├── id
├── session_id
├── branch_id
├── term_name (VARCHAR)
├── term_order (1, 2, 3)
├── start_date
├── end_date
├── is_active
├── total_weeks
├── holidays (JSON)
├── created_at
└── updated_at
exam.term_id → academic_terms.id
```

### Data Flow

1. **Creating an Exam**:
   - User selects term from dropdown
   - Dropdown populated using `get_session_terms(get_session_id(), $branch_id)`
   - Returns 3 terms: First, Second, Third
   - Saves `academic_terms.id` to `exam.term_id`

2. **Displaying Exam**:
   - Query JOINs `exam` with `academic_terms`
   - Gets `term_name` from `academic_terms.term_name`
   - Displays as: "Exam Name (First Term)"

3. **Managing Terms**:
   - Navigate to Sessions module
   - Click "View Terms" on any session
   - Inline edit dates, activate terms
   - All exams automatically reference updated terms

---

## Migration Statistics

- **Tables Dropped**: 1 (`exam_term`)
- **Models Updated**: 2
- **Controllers Updated**: 2
- **Views Updated**: 6
- **Helper Functions Used**: 2 (`get_term_name()`, `get_session_terms()`)
- **Lines of Code Changed**: ~150
- **Lines of Documentation Added**: ~220

---

## Testing Performed

✅ Migration script runs without errors

✅ Exam display includes term name
✅ Deprecated term management redirects to Sessions
✅ Sidebar menu hides old "Exam Term" option
✅ Report cards display exam names with terms

---

## Benefits

1. **Centralized Management**: Terms managed in one place (Sessions module)

- Deprecated methods show helpful messages

---

## Next Steps

### For Administrators

1. **Run the Migration**:
   ```
   Navigate to: yoursite.com/migration_runner
   Click "Run Migrations"
   ```

2. **Verify Terms**:
   ```
   Navigate to: yoursite.com/sessions
   Click "View Terms" on each session
   Ensure all 3 terms exist
   ```

3. **Fix Missing Terms** (if any):
   ```
   Navigate to: yoursite.com/fix_terms
   Click "Fix All Sessions" button
   ```

4. **Test Exam Creation**:
   ```
   Navigate to: Exam > Exam List
   Create a new exam
   Verify term dropdown works
   ```

### For Developers

1. **Update Custom Code**:
   - Replace `exam_term` references with `academic_terms`
   - Use `get_term_name($term_id)` helper instead of direct queries
   - Use `get_session_terms($session_id, $branch_id)` for dropdowns

2. **Database Cleanup**:
   - Migration automatically drops `exam_term` table
   - No manual cleanup needed

3. **Future Development**:
   - Use `academic_terms` for all term-related features
   - Leverage additional fields (start_date, end_date, is_active, total_weeks)
   - Consider using term_order for sorting

---

## Rollback Procedure

If you need to rollback:

1. **Backup Database First**:
   ```sql
   mysqldump -u username -p database_name > backup.sql
   ```

2. **Run Rollback**:
   ```
   Navigate to: yoursite.com/migration_runner
   Set target version to 196
   Run migration
   ```

**Note**: Data migration reversal is not supported. The `exam_term` table will be recreated but will be empty.
